Are on line degrees looked at the way a degree from a 4 year college is looked at in the work place?

If your degree is a distance learning degree from a traditional 4-year college, then the response would be similar, but if you are talking about degrees from commercial online enterprises, many employers will not consider them equivalent and won't hire anyone with an online degree.

Let's be honest. You can't compare a degree from Harvard with a degree from the University of Phoenix.

Unfortunately, they used to be. However, because of too many people committing this act of fraud, most employers requiring a degree will do a background check. Yet, there are still some that don't, so it's not necessarily impossible to get away with it. If you get caught you may end up serving time for fraud, though.
Not to mention what collateral damage one can do with an unacreditted degree. Watch "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills" and you'll see what I mean. Unfortunately this is a true story. Nothing faked, not even name changes.
