Has anyone had success getting their Master's or PhD online?

I currently have a B.S. and I still want to get my Master's (PhD if possible) and was wondering if anyone has successfully taken a graduate level program entirely online (never went to a classroom). I work full time and my job has me travelling all over the country, so a classroom environment is not feasible.

Does anyone know of any quality available online degrees? Also, did you find that the quality of the program was comparable to that of traditional classes? What university did you graduate from and would you recommend the approach?.
Thinking of getting my masters in Economics, Finance or Comp Info System (I double majored in Econ/CIS)

I have done both. I have an MBA that I did entirely in a classroom setting, and am 2 classes from finishing an MS that was done entirely online. I take my online classes from Keller Graduate School of Management. They are a division of Devry University.

I really like the online class style. It depends on whether or not you can structure yourself to study and participate on your own.

I would say that it is comparable to a univerisity as long as the coursework isn't something that really requires in person contact with a professor.

With the online classes at Keller, you are required to participate in a bulletin board like setting. The professors post discussion questions that you have to respond to as well as responding to the statements made by your classmates. There are also the usual assignments or projects that are required just like a "regular" course.

I am contemplating a PhD but wonder if it is feasible when I start near my 59th birthday? Will I make enough-money teaching online to make this worth the money and the time element involved to complete? I am now teaching online but find the money not as good as I thought and wonder if the Phd would be worth the money spent…
What are your thoughts?

Yes because it gives you more credibility and thats how your payrate increases

In PhD admissions, are online schools as reputable as Brick and Mortar schools ?

When it comes to admissions into PhD programs, does anyone think that faculty may look down on an applicant because he or or she received a degree from an Online school instead of a traditional Brick & Mortar school?

Online programs offered by traditional brick and mortar schools are generally not frowned upon now as much as in the past since instructional technology has progressed so much and allow for the same, if not a better, experience you’d have in a traditional classroom setting. The exception is the Ivy League. These schools still have a bit of research to do before they are convinced. If you earned a degree online, this should not be indicated on your transcripts, therefore don’t mention it. Ofcourse, if you got your degree from an online school like Pheonix, Strayer, or Argosy, these are generally frowned upon by everyone.

Other than a masters degree or PhD, are there any other requirements for teaching ONLINE undergrad courses?

I do not think this is possible. What are you going to eat and where are you going to live whilst studying ? How will you obtain books and writing materials to write up your thesis ? You will need access to a computer most probably, and they are not free. Your clothes and shoes will wear out and need replacing. You may have to travel, and will need money to buy the tickets. The hidden costs of gaining knowledge are high.

I'd like to look into online degrees…masters or Phd, but it takes so long to get to the place where they disclose the fees. Does anyone know a site that has that up front? Since all the major universities have them now, I can understand the benefit of saying I have one from say, Penn State, but at the same price as an in-class one? I don't see it as the same at all – no matter how hard they try to sell that concept.

I do not know of a comparison website for the cost of online programs (I have spent time myself looking for any types of comparisons relating to online programs). I am continuing to look.

About the pricing, I think you will generally find online programs to cost the same as or more than on campus programs. It has nothing to do with how good an online degree might be versus on campus, or with the fact that you are likely to take less of the instructors' time if you are online than if you are on campus.

It has to do with the cost of delivering online programs.

1. Someone has to videotape the lectures, and that requires someone to be there, running the equipment, the whole time.

2. More preparation has to be done by the instructors, because online is actually an extra class section that they have to keep track of and grade (in some cases, instructors are compensated extra for their online work).

3. The lectures have to be made so that they can be streamed to you, on demand. The technology for doing that is readily available, but it is not yet cheap.

4. Separate websites have to be maintained where you can get class materials, check on homework assignments, get special announcements, etc.

5. The online programs that are run by online only universities are typically part of for-profit enterprises, so they must cover all of these costs and make a profit margin!

You sometimes see online programs with corporate sponsorships, and this helps to defray the cost. But without that, things can get tough for the school.

I know of one program at a major (nonprofit) university that operates at a loss, even with good enrollment.

Bottom line is that you, the student, pays heavily for the convenience of not having to physically attend class.

Do any schools have online doctorate or phd programs?

I'm wondering if any "brick and mortar" schools offer doctorates or phd degrees online. I know there is plenty extension schools that have masters programs online (Harvard, NE, MIT, etc…) but nothing further up. Please keep in mind im only asking about programs associated with well known, non-online only, schools.
If you know of several schools that do I'm preferably interested a business degree.

You misunderstood the question. This is exactly why I am asking about major colleges/universities that offer online degrees. I am not asking about uni of phoenix, capella or anything of that sort. On another note, some online regionally accredited schools are respected by employers (NOT the two I listed) above but this is outside the question.

I think we're still too soon to see the PhD wholly or substantially online here in the states, not because of quality but because of demand and availability of resources. We'll see the EdD wholly online soon at even more schools. The exceptional choices at the master's level is growing – Johns Hopkins now has their master's online.
