I'm looking into flow cytometer analysis programs for the PC and I was
wondering whether anyone had any insight into which programs were the
most useful and worthwhile. From what I have seen, Flow-Jo and
FCSexpress are the more commonly used PC programs. Does anyone have
any experience with either of these programs? The other option would
be to purchase another Macintosh and use CellQuest. Advice, comments,
suggestions?
You can use Summit from Dako is free and gives you the possibility to
do offline compensation. However, the best flow cytometry software is
FlowJo. There is a PC (Java based) and a Mac version. The Mac version
for the moment is quite better.
I'm not a PC person, but am an ardent flow person. My flow friends
with PCs swear by WinMidi, which is free. If you Google for free flow
cytometry software, you'll come to 2 sites, one at UMass, one at
Scripps. Lots of free analysis software for the PC, maybe because BD
relied on Macs for so long.
As an update, I tried trial versions of FCSexpress and FlowJo and
wasn't really happy with either of them compared to Cell Quest. I
found FCSexpress almost impossible to work with. FlowJo was alright,
but I don't think I had the time to really get the software down.
Anyone know if BD ever plans to put out CellQuest on PC?

Don't quote me, but I do believe that CellQuest is available for PC
because the newer BD flow cytometers are digital and use PCs for
acquisition. Mlinde, have you ever tried WinList or WinMidi? Both of
those were written for PCs. Also WEASEL comes in PC and Mac versions.
Did you read the flow perspectives? There is a software discussion
there. (Disclosure– I wrote it).
Mlinde or anyone else, you can contact me through the SAB e-mail
system if you want to discuss flow software or anything flow some more
off the forum. I'll be glad to help if I can.

many but there any many alternatives

    Flow Cytometry Plus Microscopy

"The visualpower of microscopy plus the statistical rigor of flow
cytometry rolled into 1 package." That's the company's tag line. And
they deliver.

    LOVETHELAB?************

I'm a BD flow lover, a confirmed Mac user (I tell everyone "I don't do
Windows"). So why am I touting a machine made by Amnis that requires
Windows? Because this instrument goes above and beyond mere flow
cytometry- it shows you every event (that's cell to non-flow users) in
detail. I used it and I am sold. It takes a single experiment now to
do intracellular localization, in place of two. A simpler caspase
activation assay. What's not to love? Even the computer quandary is
solvable (the one feature I'd change: I'd have it run off a Mac) -
with an Intel Mac; just get Parallels software, install Windows, and
you are good to go, or rather, run. And the ImageStream can run off
an Intel Mac this way too. I bought an Intel iMac just for analysis.
Installation of Parallels was easy, IDEAS is about as intuitional as
any flow software package. And Amnnis reps bend over to be helpful.
Don't let the price tag scare you; rather, help write a shared-
instrument grant (we did) for your institution to get one. It is
simply amazing.

You can use Summit from Dako is free and gives you the possibility to
do offline compensation. However, the best flow cytometry software is
FlowJo. There is a PC (Java based) and a Mac version. The Mac version

Mlinde or anyone else, you can contact me through the SAB e-mail
system if you want to discuss flow software or anything flow some
more
off the forum. I'll be glad to help if I can.

    General Flow Cytometry Resources

    Purdue University Cytometry Laboratory
Website

Start learning about flow cytometry on the web at this site. The most
comprehensive flow cytometry and analytical cytology website I have
found. You will find resources ranging from archived protocols to
request forms for the latest protocols CD-ROMs – and they are free
while supplies last. Job listings, meetings, journals, latest
developments- it is all here.

    Lectures
Website

Dr. J. Paul Robinson, Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine,
has put a compilation of lec-ture slides on a website. Some of the
information is bullet statements, but the pictures are great. If
you've never seen a flow cytometer, you'll see lots of them here. If
you are new to flow, you'll find in-troductory slides here.

Practical Flow Cytometry, Fourth Edition by Howard Shapiro, published
by J. Wiley & Sons, 2003.
Website

Dr. Shapiro has kindly put his textbook online through Molecular
Probes. It is free! Yes, you do need to register to see it, but that's
all you need to do, and you have access forever.

    Website

archived and can be searched by topic.

    International Society for Analytical Cytology
Website

The premier society for flow cytometry, it publishes Cytometry Parts A
and B (Clinical Cytometry), Case Studies in Clinical Flow Cytometry,
and Current Protocols in Cytometry. These are available on-line, but
you must be subscribed for access. Regular dues are US $126; fees are
deeply dis-counted for students, post-doctoral fellows, and scientists
from developing nations. Please consider joining.

National Flow Cytometry Resource, Los Alamos National Laboratories
Website

Where the cutting edge happens. NFCR runs a course every June that
alternates between Los Ala-mos and New England. I recommend it to the
serious flow person; you will learn a tremendous amount, including how
to build your own flow cytometer, if you are so inclined.

    FlowCyte
Website

This discussion group is dedicated to flow users interested in

I want to start a Training and Consulting school that offers computer online training. Once an individual has completed my 4 levels of training programs, I will offer Master and Doctoral Certificates. Do I need to have a license or have a specific contract made for my students to use the title of Doctor? The certificate is only to show the level of skills acquired, form my school, and not to be transfers to a college, for college or educational credit. How does this work in regards to Ministers in churches that say they are a Dr.? Could I follow the same format?

To use the term doctor you have to have a doctorate degree. Ministries can use the term if they have a doctorate degree in any field of study. What you are looking to do would be non credit based continuing education. You can not award degrees or anything other than a certificate of completion in that type of school. You can only label yourself as an educator or trainer. If you are not accredited you can not award master or doctorate certificates.

My older sister is approaching 40 at breakneck speed, has never married, and has only had one long-term serious relationship. She lives with my parents and is awaiting acceptance to a doctoral program at a local school. She's attractive, intelligent and articulate, although somewhat immature with her "shock-politics" (calling herself a Socialist-Marxist and supporting mandatory government curbing of populations by any means).

The real problem is that she is "dating" a married man who's a recovering alcoholic, but successful and well-off. She talks of his wife as "needy," "clingy" and (ironically) "suspicious." She broke it off briefly while he was abroad, but as soon as he returned they got back together . . . but now they're apart again.

How can I make her see how wrong this situation is? She insists that, at her age, all "prospects" are married, divorced or losers living with their parents (ahem), and she won't take me seriously because I met my love online, which she doesn't approve of.

Margo, this relationship has caused her to seek medical attention, and the doc who prescribed her antidepressant told her it's best for her to move on. How can I help her? She's my only sibling.

Well she's lucky to have a brother who cares about her happiness. It always surprises me when women who are obviously intelligent in some areas can be so stupid in others. Hooking up with a married man is never a good idea, if they'll do it with you they will eventually do it to you. I'm surprised she hasn't found a kindred spirit at school. I do hope she loses the married guy, I just don't see how that can ever be a good idea.
Keep being supportive and congrats on your finding love (doesn't matter where as long as it's real).

I’m presently an undergrad in Computer Engineering (with a focus on digital hardware) and I’m looking at grad school applications now and trying to determine whether it makes sense to apply for the doctoral programs or simply go for the Master’s degree. The advise I have found online seems to fall into two primary – contradictory – camps.
1. For engineering, only go for the masters degree, particularly if you’re not interested in going into Academics. Otherwise you may price yourself out of the market.
2. Go for the PhD, you’ll find it easier to get into schools and get funded.

I’m interested in adding a level of art to what I know, but I also want to deepen my knowledge of the core of EE, namely linear/non-linear circuit theory, feedback systems and analog design (which seems to be an art unto itself). MIT’s Media Lab is one such place where this seems like it may be possible, but finding other programs – particularly ones that may provide funding – has been challenging. Would it be wiser to stick to the more traditional EE route (which I do thoroughly enjoy.) or continue on trying to find other programs that are more focused on what I want to eventually do?

So, boiled down – Does it make sense to go for the MS or PhD? and should I focus more closely on programs that fit what I want, or go the more traditional EE route?

The two camps of advice are actually in agreement with no contradiction. They both bear some truth. An MS leads to a practical job in industry while a PhD leads to research and intellectual challenges. It all depends on your interest. Your discussion reflects a passion for exploration. I think you’ll do well pursuing a PhD in the area that interests you and affords you freedom of thought.
I'm finding it a little hard to believe that you can't find schools that offer a PhD or EdD in education. I can't think of any major research universities that do NOT offer the degree.

The following link below will bring you to US News's rankings of graduate programs in education.

I was wondering what are the lowest possible costs for phd program in clinical psychology? also, i was wondering if having completed MA in psychology would shorten a phd program, taking off a year or two? meaning would any courses taken toward MA in psychology would eliminate the need for certain classes in phd program?

I have a B.A. in Psychology, a M.S.Ed in special education, and 30 additional credits including NJ state certification as a school counselor, and courses in literacy. I am 54 with 32 years in public education and a child in college and am looking to earn a doctorate in education or school counseling but I have very limited funding. Most doctoral programs, in class and online, seem to accept only about 3 courses and then charge about 10-15K for the remaining coursework. On top of my son’s college costs, this is impossible. I am looking for a university that would accept all 30 of my post-masters credits toward a doctorate and/or would exchange me teaching classes for tuition credit toward my doctorate. I also wonder if I can get any credit for my work experience. I am in the southern NJ area. Is there a way I can apply all I have already accomplished to abbreviate the time and reduce the cost of earning a doctorate?

Depends on whether you want an APA accredited school or not.

If you do, chances are you will be going to a state university where you have to have competitive GRE scores, GPA, and they may offer you an assistantship (teaching or research), which will cover tuition and give you a monthly stipend. They will most likely NOT accept past credit, but only a few classes.

If you go the non-accredited route, it will be faster (you’ll get all kinds of credit recognized) but you won’t get funding for the rest and you will have a harder time finding internship or a job, since most of these places are for-profit diploma mills.
