Do any branches accept online degrees from regionally accredited brick and mortar schools? not for profit…?

I asked a Navy recruiter if they accepted online degrees and he said no that there has to be a in house residency requirement met. Is this the same for all branches and how can they discriminate if the diploma looks the same as the next person? I was thinking of doing a program with Bellevue university in computers and getting into a Information Warfare program.
I am a prior enlisted navy corpsman trying to get into IT. The position I inquired about is for an officer position. I know that would make it more competitive but I don't think they should force people to go to study at campus especially as a adult learner after serving many years with the Navy. How is it realistic for an enlisted service member whos on active duty go to school at campus? So their saying that their enlisted will never become officers unless they get accepted to some special program where they get to go to university while still enlisted… the chances aren't that good… so I guess the only way is to get out to do the campus thing, but they never want you to leave and insist you stay in while you finish school. This is one of the many reasons is so hard for an enlisted member to cross to officer. They label us from the beginning. Not everyone has parents that pay for their kids to go to school.

The recruiter is likely wrong – find another one who knows what he's talking about. Very, very many military personnel have earned their degrees online or by distance. It also doesn't have to be regionally accredited – the Dept of Defense recognizes all accreditors recognized by the US Dept. of Education.

Further, how would they know if it was online or not? That's not a question on the forms and the diploma and transcripts don't say.

Add: I think you're missing part of what you're being told. There are only a few ways to achieve a commission. Simply having a bachelor's degree isn't one of them – very many enlisted people have a bachelor's degree these days and I can show you one Navy unit where many enlisted people have a doctorate (look at the bio page of the Navy Band).

To get a commission you need to 1) go to the academy 2) go through ROTC 3) be direct appointed because you have a professional specialty (doctor, lawyer, preacher…) or 4) go to OCS. As an enlisted person, you could have gone to OCS if you qualified. Some people are able to enlist and then go to OCS but they must be highly qualified.

If you want to go back to college and have that experience result in a commission then you'll need to look at an ROTC program – they don't do those online. An alternative is to get your degree in one of the professions and then apply for a direct commission. That would mean getting the bachelor's degree and then going to professional school.

They aren't being unfair in the slightest here – you have four options for going after a commission but you're more than welcome to get a degree at Bellevue and remain enlisted.

Almost every major, and most minor, university in the US offers courses online these days. It's just no big deal. Many offer degrees wholly online.

Some of the for-profits (UoP et al) are regionally accredited.

The following well known universities have online classes and they are RA as well.

Harvard, UMass, Boston U, U Fla, Brigham Young, UCLA… in fact, just surf of to University of [your state] and see what they're offering.

It's NOT worse at all — the research says it's harder and you learn more. Check it out on Google scholar. The only difference in online/classroom is that the online folks miss out on those more important drinking, drugs, and babe/dude social interactions.

University of Illinois has on-line programs on their SIU, UIUC, UIC campuses, and Governors State has an On-line addiction studies program on the grad level. ISU also has a few, it all depends what you are trying to study.

It depends entirely upon what you call cheap. I suspect your local state college and local community college system both teach online and will be the "cheapest" you're likely to find.

http://cconline.cerrocoso.edu/programs/ would be an example of a local community college with outstanding fees (locally) and acceptable academics online.

There are thousands of these type programs around the US now – you just have to look around your state and see what's there.

Some states have a single website with all of the online degrees at all of the state schools listed – such as the one in California http://www.cvc.edu/

On their website they say tuition is cost per credit hour ($515)…. and the course is 67 credit hours. So total tuition is 515 X 67 = $34,505????? Wow, that's a lot.

I want to get an online degree in comptuer information technology. I work and don’t have time to do all my classes at a school. I need to find an online school that is accredited and that the classes and degree can transfer to other schools if i should change my mind and want to finish my degree in class.

The key is to make sure the college/university is accredited. I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.

1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.

2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.

3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. The only school that has an accredited MSW program is Florida State University (and it may only be an advanced standing program). The warning from the last poster is good to heed. Watch out for Canyon College which is an unaccredited school and program offering a BSW and MSW degree. DA
