What do employers think about a master’s degree learned online?

Currently I work for a career college. I am able to receive full tution reinbursement for my masters degree if I attend a sister school of hte college I currently work. The opportunity is great, however, I would take purely all online courses. Does anyone know how other employers would view online courses? Has anyone taken an entire masters degree online?

Online education is accredited as any physical university. Believe it or not, it is education of the future. We maybe a little skepical because its a little new. Classes are challenging and require actual studying! When I earned my B.A., I didnt read anything- just took notes in class. Online, you have to be involved. Also, physical universities are offering online classes. Its convenient for real adults with families and bills. I am taking my MPA online and I have learned more than I have in my undergrad. Really, online education is of the future, dont underestimate it- good luck.

There are hundreds of universities in the U.S. that offer these degrees. Some of the better Universities out there in this field: Oregon State, Cornell, Michigan, University of Montana, Humboldt State, Wisconsin – Stevens Point, UC Davis. However, I would recommend finding a topic (e.g. landscape ecology, population genetics, ornithology, etc) that interests you and contact experts in that specific field to see if they are taking on grad students. I doubt it. Students that come here to study can only work 20 hours a week during the school semesters and for the first year they have to work on campus. Maybe after you get your degree in whatever field you could get some sort of work permit. I'm really not positive. Here are a few websites you could check out. Do you believe that an accredited online college/university for a Masters Degree has any credibility yet in the world today? Will it help someone in the future? Do businesses look at this on a resume and take an online degree as having no value? Any experience in the area would be of help.

Most reputable schools offer on line masters programs. Syracuse, Boston University, Univ of Florida, Carnegie Mellon, and hell even Harvard has a on line graduate program. On line degrees from these schools and others are the same as the degree that you would get it you went to class on the campus. I would be wary of schools who are entirely on line like Capella, Walden and etc. Also beware of schools that don't carry a good reputation such as Univ. of Phoenix!!!!!!

If you choose to do the online degree–your best bet is to find an actual university offering an online degree. I'm going to start working on an MBA online next year, but on the diploma, it doesn't distinguish it being an online degree. It's the same degree as if I had been in the actual classroom. That's what you want if you want to ensure your degree will be seen as "legit" and respectable. There are some out there–you just have to look. Since you didn't post what field, I really can't suggest specifics. I'd stay away from U of Phoenix if you can help it…you are better off spending more time/money and getting a degree from a school in physical existence. You are reallllllly taking your chances if you pursue a degree from U of Phoenix. I know plenty of people who have had employers disregard online degrees from UOP and similar online "universities." By the way, if you can complete a 4 year degree in, say, 14 months online, there is something wrong with that–and THAT'S when you run into problems with the degree being legit and respectable. But there is a compromise–you can find respectable schools offering online programs. Boston University offers a few I think, as well as some other schools along the East coast.

But like I said, the program I am pursuing is legit and is the typical 2 years you should spend on an MBA. You really can't cut corners on time when it comes to getting a degree. As far as employers/grad schools are concerned, time investment is half the battle in higher education. Be wary of any online program that offers you short cuts like that. Good luck!
